How to get PR in Canada

To get Permanent Residency (PR) in Canada, you can apply through several immigration pathways. Here’s a breakdown of the most common and effective routes:

1. Express Entry (for skilled workers)

Best if you have good education, English/French skills, and work experience.

Steps:

  • Create an Express Entry profile at Canada.ca
  • Get your Educational Credential Assessment (ECA)
  • Take a language test (IELTS/CELPIP for English, TEF for French)
  • Get a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score
  • If you score high, you may get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for PR

Programs under Express Entry:

  • Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  • Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

2. Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

For those who want to live in a specific province.

  • Apply through a province (like Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan)
  • If nominated, you get extra points for Express Entry
  • Or, you can apply for PR directly with a provincial nomination

3. Atlantic Immigration Program

If you work or study in Atlantic Canada (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, Newfoundland).

  • Get a job offer from a designated employer
  • Apply with support from the employer

4. PR through Work Experience

If you have Canadian work experience (e.g. 1 year in a full-time skilled job), you may be eligible under:

  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC) – via Express Entry
  • Agri-Food Pilot / Truck Driver Pilot / Caregiver Pilot – based on specific jobs
  • Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP) – for smaller towns

5. PR through Family Sponsorship

If you have a spouse, common-law partner, or parent/child who is a Canadian citizen or PR.

  • Your relative sponsors you for PR
  • You must meet basic health, criminal background checks, and relationship proof

6. PR for International Students

If you studied in Canada and gained work experience:

  • Get a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP)
  • Work for 1+ year in a skilled job
  • Apply under Canadian Experience Class or PNP

Documents You’ll Usually Need:

  • Passport
  • ECA (Education assessment)
  • Language test results (IELTS/CELPIP)
  • Proof of work experience
  • Police clearance certificate
  • Medical exam results
  • Proof of funds (unless exempt)
